1. Introduction and Acceptance

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of PaleScript, a book journaling and note-taking service operated by Mathias Jæger-Pedersen ("we," "us," or "our") from Stavanger, Norway. By accessing or using PaleScript, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

2. Description of Service

PaleScript is a digital platform that allows users to:

• Create and organize reading entries and book reflections
• Track reading progress by chapters and books
• Add tags and categorize reading notes
• Search and organize personal reading history
• Retrieve book metadata from external databases

3. User Accounts and Eligibility

3.1 Age Requirement

You must be at least 13 years old to use PaleScript. Users under 18 should have parental consent.

3.2 Account Responsibility

• You are responsible for maintaining account security
• You must provide accurate and current information
• You are responsible for all activities under your account
• One person may not maintain multiple accounts

3.3 Account Termination

You may delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. Acceptable Use Policy

4.1 Permitted Uses

You may use PaleScript for:

• Personal reading journaling and note-taking
• Educational purposes and research
• Professional book reviewing and literary analysis
• Any lawful purpose that doesn't violate these Terms

4.2 Prohibited Activities

You may not:

• Upload illegal, harmful, or offensive content
• Violate intellectual property rights
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the service
• Use automated systems to extract data or overload servers
• Share your account credentials with others
• Use the service to store non-reading related content excessively
• Create content that harasses or threatens others

4.3 Content Standards

• Keep entries within character limits (15,000 characters per entry)
• Respect copyright when quoting from books
• Maintain appropriate content standards

5. Subscription and Payment Terms

5.1 Free Usage Limit

• New users may create up to 30 entries without payment
• After reaching 30 entries, a subscription is required to continue using the service

5.2 Subscription Plans

• Subscription pricing and terms will be clearly displayed before purchase
• Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled
• You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings

5.3 Payment and Billing

• Payment is processed through secure third-party payment providers
• Subscription fees are charged in advance for each billing period
• All fees are non-refundable except as stated in Section 5.4

5.4 Refund Policy

Limited refunds may be provided:

• Within 7 days of initial subscription purchase
• For technical failures that result in significant data loss on our end
• At our sole discretion for exceptional circumstances

Refunds will not be provided for:

• Account termination due to Terms violations
• User-caused data loss or account issues
• Subscription cancellations after the 7-day window

6. Content and Intellectual Property

6.1 Your Content

• You retain ownership of your reading entries and personal notes
• You grant us a license to store, display, and backup your content as necessary to provide the service
• You are responsible for ensuring your content doesn't violate third-party rights

6.2 Service Content

• PaleScript's interface, features, and functionality are owned by us
• Book metadata is sourced from third-party APIs and subject to their terms
• You may not copy, modify, or distribute our service code or design

6.3 Data Export

• You may export your personal data at any time before account deletion
• Exported data is provided in common formats for portability

7. Privacy and Data Protection

Your privacy is important to us. Please review our Privacy Policy, which explains how we collect, use, and protect your information. By using PaleScript, you agree to our Privacy Policy.

8. Service Availability and Changes

8.1 Service Availability

• We strive to maintain service availability but cannot guarantee 100% uptime
• Planned maintenance will be announced when possible
• We are not liable for service interruptions beyond our reasonable control

8.2 Service Modifications

• We may modify, update, or discontinue features at any time
• Significant changes will be communicated to users in advance
• Continued use constitutes acceptance of service changes

8.3 Service Discontinuation

• If we decide to discontinue PaleScript, we will provide at least 30 days' notice
• Users will have the opportunity to export their data during this period
• We will make reasonable efforts to facilitate data migration

9. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

9.1 Service Disclaimers

PaleScript is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee:

• Uninterrupted or error-free service
• Data backup or recovery beyond our standard practices
• Compatibility with all devices or browsers
• Accuracy of third-party book metadata

9.2 Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

• Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the service in the past 12 months
• We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages
• You use the service at your own risk

10. Termination

10.1 Termination by You

• You may delete your account at any time
• Upon deletion, your data will be permanently removed from our systems
• Active subscriptions will continue until the end of the current billing period

10.2 Termination by Us

We may suspend or terminate your account for:

• Violation of these Terms
• Fraudulent or illegal activity
• Extended periods of inactivity (with prior notice)

11. Governing Law and Disputes

11.1 Governing Law

These Terms are governed by Norwegian law, without regard to conflict of law principles.

11.2 Dispute Resolution

• Disputes should first be addressed through direct communication
• If unresolved, disputes will be handled through Norwegian courts
